Hi, I'm Vikram.

I've been photographing people since 2004. First on a Leica and a lot of film, now mostly digital. Long enough to know that a portrait isn't made when the shutter fires. It's made in the ninety seconds before, when someone stops performing and starts just being there.

I came to this sideways. I'm an engineer, and I fell for cameras through the engineering first: the optics, the tolerances, the way a lens is built to bend light one particular way. That's still how I work. Two bodies at every job, because one can fail. Files backed up before I leave the location. Galleries that arrive when I said they would.

The art came later, and it's the part I'd defend. I still shoot 35mm on a Leica M6 when a subject is worth slowing down for.

Most of the people I photograph have never been professionally photographed, and they're quietly dreading it. Getting someone past that, past the stiff shoulders and the fixed smile, is the actual craft. The camera is the easy half.
